Superdrill Expansive Mortar, also known as a stone breaking chemical, is a non-toxic, cementitious powder that consists of calcined oxides of calcium, silicon, and aluminum. When mixed with water, expansive mortar generates an impressive expansive pressure of 11,200 T/m², making it highly effective at fracturing materials such as marble, granite, limestone, concrete, boulders, and ledges without causing noise, vibration, or flying debris. This makes it an ideal solution for situations where traditional explosives are not allowed or feasible.

How Does Expansive Mortar Work?
Expansive mortar works by generating a highly expansive force, achieving a consistent volume exceeding 122 MPa (11,200 T/m²), which is sufficient to break even the toughest materials. The tensile strength of most rocks typically ranges from 5 to 25 MPa, while reinforced concrete breaks at about 3 to 5 MPa. This vast difference enables expansive mortar to perform effectively in various demolition projects.
Applications of Expansive Mortar
- Quarrying: Effective for extracting marble, granite, limestone, and sandstone.
- Breaking Rock: Ideal for breaking rocks into manageable pieces or for clearing falling debris.
- Demolition: Useful for demolishing structures, chipping away defective concrete piles, and more.
- Civil Engineering: Employable in diverse applications such as:
- Bridges
- Dams
- Heavy machinery bases
- Concrete piers
- Thick slabs (6” or more)
Advantages of Expansive Mortar
- No Permits Needed: No special licenses are required for use.
- Long Shelf Life: The product lasts for up to 2 years.
- Versatile Temperature Use: One formulation can be used across a wide range of temperatures.
- Safe Operation: No noise, vibration, or flying debris during the breaking process.
- User-Friendly: Easy to use with no extensive training required.
- MSDS Available: Documentation available for safety information.
Types and Packaging of Expansive Mortar
Superdrill offers three variants of expansive mortar based on usable temperatures:

Packing Options: Expansive mortar is available in powder form, packaged in inner plastic bags of 5 kg, 20 kg cartons, or one-ton wooden pallets.
How to Use Superdrill Expansive Mortar
Mixing: To activate the expansive mortar, mix thoroughly with clean water in a ratio of 30% of the total weight—approximately 1.5 liters of water for each 5 kg bag. Gradually add the powder to the water while stirring continuously until you achieve a smooth, lump-free mixture.
Filling: Pour the prepared mortar into the drilled holes within 5 to 10 minutes after mixing. If needed, stop horizontal holes to prevent leakage, using a sponge to retain the mortar.
Drilling Guidelines: The distance between holes depends on the hole size and material type. For softer rock, spacing should be 30 to 60 cm, while for reinforced concrete, 20 to 30 cm is recommended.
Storage Instructions
- Dry Storage: Store Superdrill expansive mortar in a dry place to prevent deterioration of its components.
- Elevated Storage: Avoid placing bags directly on the floor; use pallets instead. Properly stored expansive mortar remains effective for about a year.
- Sealing: Reseal remaining mortar after use by pushing out air from the bag and sealing it tightly.
Safety Precautions
- Wear safety goggles, rubber gloves, long-sleeve clothing, and a helmet during handling.
- Avoid standing close to filled holes for at least 3 hours post-filling to prevent injuries from potential blow-outs.
- In poorly ventilated areas, use a dust mask.
- Keep bystanders away from the job site during mortar application.
- Immediate Action: Rinse skin contact with large amounts of cold water, and flush eyes with water if exposed.
In summary, Superdrill's expansive mortar is a powerful tool for effective and safe demolition and stone breaking. Follow the guidelines outlined here for best results, and don’t hesitate to reach out for additional information or assistance on your projects.
